This local guided tour takes you along the old road that follows the fjord to the little village of Bakka. This road is frequently closed in the winter due to avalanches and the inhabitants of Bakka are then isolated for days, often weeks, and when the fjord freezes over, there is often nothing to do but wait… On this tour, you will see for your selves just how powerful, and spectacularly beautiful nature can bee. You will hear some local folklore and meet some of the people that survive in this rugged environment all year round. If you are into things botanic, then this tour has some interest for you as wild flowers abound, as do herbs and plants rarely seen outside the region. Gudvangen was a viking village and the vikings brought back with them some of the plants found, most brought intentionally, some came in with the cargoes. As the Fjord is a designated World Heritage site, there are some restrictions on picking some of the specimens, but if you follow the instructions of the guide, there should be no problems.
After walking 6 km, we reach the village of Bakka where, in the local schoolhouse, you will enjoy a lunch of Salmon Soup, homemade bread, Potatocake(lefse) with goatcheese and coffee. After the lunch it is time to visit a local farm, where you can say hello to some of the goats for which the region is famous. This is then followed by a visit to the local church, which is the smallest currently used church in Scandinavia. As we make our way back to Gudvangen, a few of you may begin to show signs of wear and tear. This is the time to stop by one of the waterfalls on the rout and have what we call a «powershower». If you don’t feel like taking the whole shower, splash your face or drink from the benefits. A waterfall such as this is packed with cool refreshing energy, so grab the chance, and fill your bottles too! This is a safe and pleasant walkingtour designed for all ages, but if something should occur, or you simply had enough, we’ll make a quick call, and a car will pick you up. We recommend this tour as one that allows close contact with the fjord and its spectacular nature, and also to meet the locals and learn of the folklore.
